Hypermiling is a method of increasing your car's gas mileage by making skillful changes in the way you drive, allowing you to increase MPG and save gas.
In short hypermiling is a greener way of driving.
Here are some Hypermiling Techniques you can use in achieving the hypermiling skill.
.
Check tire pressure. Maintain proper or slightly above normal tire pressure. Check your tires for the maximum pressure that they can be filled to. This is listed on the sidewall.
Tire balance: Most cars tires are balanced to ¼ oz. Next time you have them balanced, ask if they can be balanced to 1/8oz or go to a dealership.
Wheel alignment. If your car pulls to one side have it checked out.
Use engine oil with low-kinematics viscosity or low “weight” motor oil such as a 0W20 or 0W30. If your vehicle is under warranty, use your vehicle manufacturers recommended motor oil.
Check or replace the oxygen sensor every 100,000 miles.
Check you air filter twice a year and replace it every 10,000-12,000 miles.
Maintaining a slow, even pace by coasting and even avoiding coming to a complete stop when safe.
Find that highway speed that gives you your best MPG within the posted speed limit. This can be done with a Scangauge
or KIWI from Mileagepros.com.
Coast as much as possible. Don't rush to that stop sign or traffic signal. Lift your foot off the pedal when approaching a stop to coast more.
Be aware of your surroundings, anticipate what is happening ahead to maximize coasting time.
Research and buy a gas saving device, one that monitors and alerts the driver if he/she is driving too aggressively such as by accelerating too fast or braking too harshly.
It retrains your driving habits making you drive more efficiently. One very good monitoring system is KIWI.
Use cruise control whenever possible. Holding a steady speed will give the best MPG. When using a ScanGauge or KIWI,
you can get better MPG without cruise control by monitoring the load, throttle position, RPM, and actual MPG.
Stay in the right hand lane and follow the speed limits. As cars go around you, they create a low pressure zone across the entire roadway, and that's called the traffic side draft.
It does give you another 15 to 20 second boost as the lower pressure area you're coming through helps you along.
Turn car off at long traffic lights.
Accelerate slowly.
Coast through turns using as little braking as possible but keeping it safe.
Warnings
Stay away from advanced hypermiling techniques that you aren't comfotable with or may be illegal.
They may be too risky, not only for yourself but for the safety of other drivers.
Don't roll through stop signs to avoid braking.
Don't turn off a car's engine or shift into neutral to coast down hills. You may inadvertently turn the key too far and lock the steering wheel, or accidentaly shift into reverse.
Don't over-inflate tires to decrease rolling resistance because you can loose traction and get into an accident hurting you or others.
Don't use drafting techniques, such as tailgating a big rig in hopes of cutting wind resistance and being pulled along by the truck's wake.
